yes, life is short, i am doing my best to challenge myself. reading still is my best hobby. so i always read something new and something old. from reading, i can open my eyes a little more each time. with this, i communicate with my kids in a deeper understanding and sometimes without words exchanged. the only thing they know from me is that i love them.you have two lovely girls too. i am sure they love you as much. cherish every chance you have to be with them. girls have a special attach to their fathers. they are just a phone call away.press on, and love life.

I’ve been writing up some material for a thesis I’m completing. One of the quotes that sticks in my mind is from a woman named Jane Tompkins, who wrote a book reflecting on her life as an adult educator (‘A Life in School – What the Teacher Learned). As she progressed in her career, she talked/intervened less. This is her reflection on that process: ‘I’ve learned to curb my impulse to correct the students, to show them the way, because when I do it shuts them up. Allowed to meander to its furthest most insignificant trickle, ending in a long moment of emptiness, or allowed to reach a pinnacle of disorderly, excited hilarity and confusion, a class discussion can give birth to the moment that changes the destiny of the course.’I’m trying to practice this in my action learning coaching – and as the first respondant noted, it is surprising how often people get to the question that I have been waiting to ask. And if they don’t…Who is to say that I am right? Finally, I’d concur with Jane Tompkins – when I impose myself, it shuts people up. Period.

Dear Freda:Thanks for the encouraging words. Ming is my new hero. I have learned so much from her as I did from you. I still remember the time we first met 37 years ago. I just noticed you because you are such a good church choir. I used to do bible study and go to church when I first came to the States. I just love the community feeling. You are right. We need to constantly re-invent ourselves by engaging new ideas and new friends. The key is to experiment with open mind.We are not built with fixed mindset. Whenever I heard people said they cannot change, I felt they have lost the opportunity to experience life fully. Change is only a mindset to re-enforce your risk taking ( losing face/failure ) and feel you can control your destiny, for good or for bad. You take the full accountability of becoming a better you.I think you have done a great work by bringing up two fine young people. I also believe now is the time you should do something crazy with Tony so you can be the person you never know. Keep the positive energy flowing,Ping

As an AL coach, it is important that we remmbeer that AL is different from the facilitation process. Naturally, one may feel that by stepping in, we are helping the team with the learning. But in AL, a big part of the team’s learning curve lies in asking questions and reflections. There have been instances where the obvious question is not asked, but the team will still conclude at their own pace and come up with actions of their own. As the Eastern saying goes: Give the man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. In AL, the technique of asking questions will eventually guide the team to come up with their own solutions. We have to learn to trust that the process will take care of itself!
